The Sun and the Zodiac: The Sun in the birth chart and Astrology Facts

The daily motion of the Sun inside the zodiac, degree be degree, throughout the year, gives us information about its position in any sign of the zodiac, at the precise moment a person is born. So, the Sun and Zodiac have Indeed, the exact position of the Sun inside the zodiac determines the birth sign. This is why we say: “I was born under such and such a sign“. The position of the Sun designates the birth sign. For example, if you were born under the sign of Gemini, this means that at the precise moment of your birth, the Sun was travelling through the 30 degrees corresponding to the sign of Gemini.

The Sun brings light to the twelve signs of the zodiac through which it travels. This light reveals and brings forward the characteristics of that particular sign. These characteristics appear and express themselves spontaneously and naturally at that time of the year.

The Sun and Zodiac: The Sun in the birth chart and Astrology Facts

The Sun in the birth chart

In a birth chart, the Sun reveals the instinctive characteristics of an individual, that is to say, what he/she wants spontaneously. The astral sign inside which the Sun is travelling, tells us about the affinities or oppositions felt by a person born under that sign. The house in which the Sun is positioned indicated which areas of their life their instinctive characteristics will naturally be most dominant.

The aspects created with other planets inside the birth chart will either reinforce or contradict the expression of these instinctive feelings. However, the fact that the Sun is found in one of the twelve signs of the zodiac at the time of someone’s birth does not mean that that particular person will show all the inborn characteristics inherent in the sign. You will discover during the process of drawing up a birth chart that, however, strongly present the characteristics of the Sun sign are, many other factors have to be taken into account to make up the whole picture.

It would also be wrong for an astrologer to consider that the Sun is fixed inside the zodiac at the time of someone’s birth. This is not so. Sun travels through the zodiac, bringing light to all the sectors of a birth chart. Over the years, it regularly enters each of the elements positioned inside the zodiac of a birth chart. This is what is called the Sun’s transit and it is this action that gradually brings a person to maturity. It is one of the Sun’s tasks to bring together and, ideally, unify all the components of a personality.

Every year, at a fixed date, the Sun is found exactly where it was at the time of birth. For the astrologer, the Sun’s return to its starting point is a kind of renewal for the person concerned who is therefore embarking on a new annual cycle or solar year. The Sun brings together and balances all the qualities of an individual and all the components of their personality. A person’s chance of self-fulfilment is therefore revealed by the Sun’s position inside the zodiac of a birth chart. Where the Sun is found, nothing can be hidden.

Astrological facts about the Sun

As we have said, the Sun reveals the instinctive and subconscious parts of our character. In the birth chart, the Sun often indicates the presence of a man, husband, lover or masculine influence which is either exerted or felt by a person. In a woman’s birth chart, the position of the Sun tells us about the nature of her masculine side (not manly – which would be revealed by the presence of Mars, as we shall see later on), but what she feels about her independence and personal fulfilment.

Astronomical facts about the Sun

It takes approximately 25 days for the Sun to revolve on its own axis. It is a star, the one closest to earth. Its surface temperature is estimated to be 5,000° C. The distance of the perihelion (furthest point) between the Sun and the Earth is 147 million kilometres and 151 million kilometres at the aphelion (closest point). The photosphere is the visible surface of the Sun through a telescope.

The chromosphere is a colourful sphere surrounding the photosphere, which is only visible during a solar eclipse. It has erupting points in the shape of tongues of fire. The solar corona is the outer layer of the Sun. Sunspots are the results of disturbances on the surface of the photosphere. They are a sign of solar activity, they last approximately 100 days and occur in a seven to fifteen-year cycle. This was the Sun’s characteristic.
